From June 12 to 13, 2025, the 8th HKUST-Jinan Joint Workshop on Macroeconomics was successfully held at Jinan University. The Workshop was co-organized by the Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR) of Jinan University and the Department of Economics of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. These two parties have continued their academic cooperation by taking turns hosting the event.
Scholars from renowned institutions, such as the University of Mannheim, University College London, Georgetown University, LUISS University, University of Osaka, Geneva Graduate Institute, University of Queensland, Hong Kong University, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, Peking University, and Jinan University, attended the Workshop.

In the presentation session, twelve scholars presented their latest research in macroeconomics.
Professor Vincent Sterk (University College London) presented a paper titled “Optimal Monetary Policy during a Cost-of-Living Crisis.”
Professor Yunho Cho (Jinan University) presented a paper titled “How Does Tax-and-Transfer Progressivity Affect Household Consumption Insurance?”
Professor Youngsoo Jang (University of Queensland) presented a paper titled “Redistribution and Government Commitment.”
Professor Moritz Kuhn (University of Mannheim) presented a paper titled “To Have or Not to Have: Understanding Wealth Inequality.”
Professor Toshihiko Mukoyama (Georgetown University) presented a paper titled “Efficiency in Job-Ladder Models.”
Professor Xincheng Qiu (Peking University) presented a paper titled “Perceived Unemployment Risks over Business Cycles.”

Professor Byoungchan Lee (HKUST) presented a paper titled “Cyclical Returns to Scale and the Slopes of the Phillips Curves.”

Professor Johannes Boehm (Geneva Graduate Institute) presented a paper titled “The Network Origins of Firm Dynamics: Contracting Frictions and Dynamism with Long-Term Relationships.”
Professor Zhang Chen (HKUST) presented a paper titled “Firm Entry and Market Interdependence: Evidence from Anti-dumping Tariffs on Chinese Exports.”
Professor Ryo Horii (University of Osaka) presented a paper titled “Non-Exponential Growth Theory.”
In addition to the academic presentations, a field trip to the production base of GAC Aion was held prior to the event. Participants were led to visit the production process, technological innovation, and market strategy of new energy vehicles, experiencing the vigorous development of China’s new energy vehicle industry.
The Workshop received positive feedback from all the participants. The successful hosting of this event laid a solid foundation for further exchanges and cooperation between IESR and scholars worldwide.
