The 9th Forum on Children of Migrants was held by the Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR) at Jinan University on May 23, 2025.
The Forum provides a platform for participants to present the latest research findings related to children of migrants with the hope of providing corresponding suggestions and solutions.
Workshop Participants
The event invited experts and scholrs from institutions including Peking University, Shaanxi Normal University, Renmin University of China, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai Normal University, Jinan University, practitioners of government officials from the Education and Sports Bureau of Mianzhu City, Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences, China Association of Social Workers, and frontliners from civil society to engage in the relevant sectors.
At the beginning of the event, Professor Shuaizhang Feng, Dean of IESR, extended a warm welcome to all the participants. He then reviewed the educational progress made in safety, education, and physical and mental health of children of migrant workers for nine consecutive years. He highly praised the experts, scholars, educators, and policymakers from all over the country for providing valuable insights and policy suggestions. At the end of the speech, he hoped that the Forum would further facilitate the research on children of migrant workers and promote the implementation of relevant policies.
Welcome Speech by Professor Shuaizhang Feng
The Policy Forum followed the welcome speech. In this section, scholars from various institutions and organizations engaged in discussions on two topics: Practical Exploration of Educational Equity and Social Support and Mental Health.
In the Dialogue session, Professor Yi Song from Peking University began with a keynote speech entitled “Constructing the '5A’ Framework and a ‘Three-dimensional’ Approach to Promoting Children and Adolescents’ Mental Health.” After her speech, several experts and practitioners, based on their working experience, focused on the psychological situation and countermeasures of children in counties and towns.

In the third session, the 2024-2025 Annual Report of Longitudinal Study of Children’s Development in Mianzhu (LSCD) was presented by Ms. Jingyi Yuan, Project Manager of IESR Survey Data Center, and Professor Yujie Han from IESR. The Center has been responsible for implementing the project since 2017.

Following the report, Mr. Liming Chen, Director of the Education and Sports Bureau of Mianzhu City, delivered a conclusion speech. He first summarized the implementation of a series of policies and measures for migrant children and left-behind children in Mianzhu City. He emphasized that in the future, with the support of IESR, Mianzhu City will continue to promote educational equity, deepen educational reform, and work with all parties to contribute to the healthy physical and mental development of children of migrant workers.

The event was ended with fruitful exchanges. Since 2016, IESR has held the Forum on Children of Migrants for nine consecutive years. In the future, IESR will continue to collaborate with scholars nationwide to promote educational equity and advocate for relevant policies.
