The 22nd CIEP Successfully Held in Shanghai

From November 2 to 3, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and Shanghai Municipal People's Government jointly hosted the 22nd Conference on International Exchange of Professionals (CIEP), themed "Gathering the Global Talents and Pursuing Win-win Cooperation," in Shanghai Zhangjiang Science Hall. Founded in 2001, the CIEP has been considered a national and comprehensive event for China's international scientific and technological innovation and international talent exchange.

Jinan University, one of the 21 university organizers of the CIEP, was honored to hold three seminars. More than 30 foreign experts and scholars from 16 countries were invited to participate in these events. The Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR) invited 16 scholars hailed from prestigious institutions, such as the University of Southern California, Duke Kunshan University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Korea Development Institute, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Jinan University to attend the Applied Economics Seminar. Professor Shuaizhang Feng, Dean of IESR, chaired this event.

Professor Shuaizhang Feng first expressed his warmest welcome to all the guests on behalf of Jinan University. Next, he briefly introduced the profound history of Jinan University and the development of IESR. At the end of his welcome speech, he emphasized that this Seminar will offer all the participants an academic platform to promote research exchange and further cooperation.

In the presentation session, twelve scholars presented their latest research in applied economics.


Professor Lung-fei Lee from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics presented a paper titled Estimation on Nonlinear Spatial Gravity Models for International Trade.


Professor Brian Viard from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business presented a paper titled Evaluating Air Pollution Regulation: Separating Firm Competitiveness and Ambient Effects.


Professor Yunho Cho from Jinan University presented a paper titled Old-age Poverty and Consumption Responses to Income Shocks in South Korea.


Professor Jorge De la Roca from the University of Southern California presented a paper titled Skill Allocation and Urban Amenities in the Developing World.


Professor Gergely Horváth from Duke Kunshan University presented a paper titled The Fragility of Reputation while Sustaining Cooperation.


Professor Yuta Suzuki from Shanghai Jiao Tong University presented a paper titled Pro-Manufacturing Land Policies of Competing Local Governments: A Quantitative Analysis of China.


Professor Zizhong Yan from Jinan University presented a paper titled Network Formation with Mutual Utility and Degree Heterogeneity.


Professor Jun Hyung Kim from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology presented a paper titled A House for My Family: The Impacts of Down Payment Rate on Marriage and Fertility.


Professor David Ong from Jinan University presented a paper titled Gender Differences in the Mating and Cross-productivity Effects of Competitiveness on Partner Income.


Professor Kaixin Liu from Jinan University presented a paper titled The Origin of New Fertility Norm: Role of Campaigns and Laws Reform.


Professor Jinseong Park from Korea Development Institute presented a paper titled In and Out: How Do Food Delivery Riders Work?


Professor Siyu Chen from Jinan University presented a paper titled Beyond the Cutoff: How Marginal Admission to Elite Universities Affects Long-term Outcomes.


The event ended with fruitful discussions and positive feedback from all the participants. The success of this Seminar has laid a solid foundation for further academic cooperation between scholars from institutions worldwide.
