2024 JNU-HKU Joint Workshop Successfully Held

On May 10, the 2024 JNU-HKU Joint Workshop on Labor and Human Capital Management was jointly hosted by the Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR) at Jinan University and Management and Strategy of HKU Business School at The University of Hong Kong.


Workshop Participants


First, Professor Shuaizhang Feng, Dean of IESR, warmly welcomed all the participants and then provided a brief overview of the history of Jinan University. He emphasized that IESR has a very active and strong applied microeconomics team, covering various research fields, such as labor, urban development, and the environment. He believed this joint workshop would allow both institutions to exchange ideas and inspire interesting ideas.

Then, Professor Jin Li, Dean of Management and Strategy of HKU Business School, was invited to give a speech. He first expressed his deep impression of IESR’s thoughtful and well-prepared organization of this workshop. At the end of the speech, he believed scholars would get more inspiration from this workshop and produce more excellent paper results.

In the presentation session, eight speakers presented their latest research in labor and human capital management.


Professor Yuna Cho from The University of Hong Kong presented a paper titled “Crisis within A Crisis: The Destabilizing Effect of Mega-crisis on Individual Work Preferences.”



ProfessorWei Lin from Jinan University presented a paper titled "Perks or Penalty? Maternity Leave and Female Executives’ Career."



ProfessorMichael Wong from The University of Hong Kong presented a paper titled “The Employment Effects of Domestic Outsourcing.”



Professor Shiyu Bo from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Urban Electricity Powers Rural Farms: Evidence from China’s First Adoption of Electric Irrigation.”



Professor Helen Hailin Zhao from The University of Hong Kong presented a paper titled “Lost in the Maze: An Action Research Study on Performance Pay Complexity.”



Professor Shuaizhang Feng from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Noncognitive Skills in the Labor Market: Evidence from One Million Online Job Postings.”



Professor Yanbo Wang from The University of Hong Kong presented a paper titled “The Contribution of Chinese Science to US Technology: Evidence from Patent Citation.”



Professor Wei Shi from Jinan University presented a paper titled “What Works for Children’s Care Policy: Evidence from Screenings and Inequalities in Rural China.”



The event ended up with fruitful exchanges and positive feedback. The successful hosting of this workshop laid a solid foundation for further exchanges and cooperation between IESR and The University of Hong Kong.
