2024 IESR-Warwick Joint Workshop Successfully Held

From June 26 to 27, the 2024 IESR-Warwick Joint Workshop was hosted on the campus of Jinan University. The event was organized by IESR, with support from the University of Warwick.

 

Scholars from the University of Warwick, Jinan University, and Southern University of Science and Technology attended the workshop. Discussions were held on topics related to labor, economic history, and Econometrics.

The opening remark was addressed by Professor Shuaizhang Feng, Dean of IESR, and Professor Mingli Chen from the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick.


In his welcome speech, Professor Shuaizhang Feng warmly greeted all the guests on behalf of IESR and then provided a brief overview of the history of Jinan University. He highlighted that IESR, a relatively new institute compared to JNU, is not only committed to academic research but also to undergraduate, master, and doctoral training programs. He also expressed his admiration for promoting more in-depth cooperation between IESR and the University of Warwick in research and talent training in the future.


Welcome Speech by Professor Shuaizhang Feng


Following his speech, Professor Mingli Chen extended her heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick for IESR’s hospitality. She emphasized that it was a great honor to communicate and interact with IESR faculty at this workshop. She also expressed her expectations for future cooperation, especially in the joint student training programs between the two institutes. At the end of her speech, she sincerely invited the IESR faculty to visit the University of Warwick in the near future.


Welcome Speech by Professor Mingli Chen


In the presentation session, thirteen speakers presented their latest research in labor and Econometrics with their collaborators, followed by active interaction with the audience.

 

Professor Mingli Chen from the University of Warwick presented a paper titled “Online Learning with Semiparametric Stochastic Approximation.”



Professor Ji-Liang Shiu from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Learning Through Occupational Search: A Latent Variable Approach.”



Professor Zizhong Yan from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Network Formation with Mutual Utility and Degree Heterogeneity.”



Professor Cong Liu from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Railroads and Industrial Development in China, 1858-1936.”



Professor Bishnupriya Gupta from the University of Warwick presented a paper titled “Economic Decolonization and Spatial Development: Evidence from India.”



Professor Shiyu Bo from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Urban Electricity Powers Rural Farms: Evidence from China’s First Electric Irrigation Program.”



Professor Bin Xie from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Unintended Consequences of Chinese Exclusion: The Impact of the 1905 Chinese Boycotton US Trade and Manufacturing.”



Professor Kaixin Liu from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Who Stays Unemployed Longer and the Failure of Machine Learning Predictions.”



Professor Jian Xie from the Southern University of Science and Technology presented a paper titled “Surname Diversity of Entrepreneurs and Corporate Innovation.



Professor Dennis Novy from the University of Warwick presented a paper titled “Urban-Biased Structural Change.”



Professor Wei Shi from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Social Identity and Dynamics of Online Opinion: Evidence from 300,000 Weibo Posts.”



Professor Ao Wang from the University of Warwick presented a paper titled “Fixed Effects Nonlinear Panel Models with Heterogeneous Slopes: Identification and Consistency.”



Professor Sen Xue from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Building Hope for the Poor.”



The two-day event ended up with fruitful exchanges and positive feedback. The successful hosting of this workshop laid a solid foundation for further exchanges and cooperation between IESR and the University of Warwick.
