The Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR) at Jinan University and the Global Labor Organization (GLO) jointly hosted the Sixth IESR-GLO Joint Workshop from October 26 to 27, 2023.
Scholars from prestigious institutions worldwide, including Maastricht University, Curtin University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Management, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Jinan University, attended the workshop. Discussions were held on topics related to labor economics, such as gender issues, child health and development.

Professor Shuaizhang Feng, Dean of IESR, and Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann, Chairman of GLO, delivered welcome speeches.
On behalf of IESR, Professor Shuaizhang Feng first warmly welcomed all participants and then thanked Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann for his massive support. He emphasized that IESR and GLO have established a close relationship since previous cooperation. As in previous years, he hoped that this year’s workshop would provide ample opportunities for communication for all participants.

Afterwards, Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann also welcomed the guests on behalf of GLO. He stressed that IESR is an essential partner of GLO, and it is an honor to attend this annual event again. Also, he hoped that this workshop would attract more Asian scholars to pay attention to the Journal of Population Economics, thereby promoting the submission of more excellent papers.
Welcome Speech by Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann
In the presentation session, seven speakers presented their latest research in labor economics with their collaborators, followed by active interaction with the audience.
Professor Astghik Mavisakalyan from Curtin University presented a paper titled “Intimate Partner Violence and Child Health.”
Professor Xinyan Liu from The Chinese University of Hong Kong presented a paper titled “No Pain, More Gain: Anti-domestic Violence Law and Female Wages in Rural China.”
Professor Tanika Chakraborty from the Indian Institute of Management presented a paper titled “Women, Violence and Work: Threat of Sexual Violence and Women’s Decision to Work.”
Professor Yun Qiu from Jinan University presented a paper titled “The Impact of Ozone Pollution on Mortality: Evidence from China.”
Professor Jun Hyung Kim from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology presented a paper titled “Parental Migration, Parenting and Children's Skill Development.”
Professor Wei Luo from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Shaping Gender Role Attitudes: Intergenerational Impacts of Parental Occupational Differences during Adolescence.”
Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann from Maastricht University presented a paper titled “Parental Gender Stereotypes and Student Wellbeing in China.”
The two-day event ended up receiving positive feedback. Many participants expected IESR to offer more international events or platforms to promote academic exchanges and cooperation. Since 2018, IESR and GLO have jointly organized the academic workshop every year, and this is the sixth session so far. In the future, IESR will continue to play a role in bridging scholars around the world to discuss economic and societal issues.
