Abstract:
Berliant and Fujita (2008) proposed a theoretical model in which agents innovate by exchanging their differentiated knowledge via common knowledge, while seeking for the best knowledge composition by the collective group formation. By using the Japanese patent data, we show evidence for positive and complementary effects of common and differentiated knowledge among collaborators, as well as the incentive for polyadic interactions that are consistent with the theory. We further show evidence for positive effects from local spillovers and transport accessibility, as well as evidence for negative effects from imitation.
