Abstract:
We use data from 192 cross-sections of 89 countries and document that occupational dynasties are more common in poor countries and in more elite occupations. We show empirically that skill inheritance and rents explain only a small part of the dynasties. We then construct a quantitative model of occupational selection to explore the effect of education and labor market frictions on dynastic bias and aggregate output. Our preliminary results imply that the differences in dynastic bias across countries are mostly due to occupation entry barriers rather than other factors such as years of schooling and rent-sharing.
