Abstract:
We examine the impact of online instruction on student learning using a field experiment at a European public university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 1,300 bachelor students were grouped and alternated between in-person and online lectures. Leveraging within-student, cross-course variations, we find that early in-person instruction improves exam performance, especially for women. Female students score 4% SD higher with one week of earlier in-person instruction and 10% SD higher when exposed to any in-person lectures in the first three weeks. Analysis of attendance and survey data reveals a stronger preference among women for face-to-face instruction, potentially driven by their need for social interaction during learning. Our results underscore the equity implications of adopting online teaching in higher education.
