The Seventh IESR-GLO Joint Workshop Successfully Held

The Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR) at Jinan University and the Global Labor Organization (GLO) jointly hosted the Seventh IESR-GLO Joint Workshop from May 16 to 17, 2024.


Scholars hailed from prestigious institutions worldwide, including Maastricht University, University of Southern California, Macquarie University, University of Sydney, University of Manitoba, Peking University, Renmin University of China, and Jinan University, attended the workshop. Discussions were held on topics related to labor economics, such as healthy aging, grandparenting, and the relationship between parents and children.

Professor Shuaizhang Feng, Dean of IESR, and Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann, Chairman of GLO, were invited to give a welcome speech.


On behalf of IESR, Professor Shuaizhang Feng first warmly welcomed all participants to visit Jinan University. With the support of Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann, IESR and GLO have jointly organized seven workshops dedicated to building global academic connections and promoting collaboration among scholars worldwide. At the end of the speech, Professor Shuaizhang Feng believed that fruitful workshop exchanges would enlighten China in dealing with issues of aging society.

Next, Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann reviewed his previous visits to IESR and expressed his honor to attend this well-organized workshop again. He hoped this year’s workshop would attract more scholars worldwide to contribute to developing the Journal of Population Economics.

In the presentation session, nine speakers presented their latest research in labor economics with their collaborators, followed by active interaction with the audience.


Professor Emma Aguila from the University of Southern California presented a paper titled “Socioeconomic Status, Health, and Wellbeing of Older Adults.”



Professor Guogui Huang from Macquarie University presented a paper titled “Determinants of Immigrant-Native Health Disparities in Australia Across 21 Years.”



Professor Yun Qiu from Jinan University presented a paper titled “The Effects of Extreme Temperatures on Dementia Mortality and Morbidity.”



Professor Jun Wang from Peking University presented a paper titled “Living Arrangements of Older Chinese: New Evidence from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).”



Professor Hong Liu from the Renmin University of China presented a paper titled “Unintended Consequences of Maternity Leave Entitlements on Female Labor Market Outcomes in China.”



Professor Yujie Han from Jinan University presented a paper titled “On the Predictive Power of Children’s Time Preferences on Future Cognitive and Behavioral Outcomes.”



Professor Shyamal Chowdhury from the University of Sydney presented a paper titled “Do Economic Preferences of Children Predict Behavior?”



Professor Janice Compton from the University of Manitoba presented a paper titled “The Demand for Grandchildren: Children as Family Public Goods.”



Professor Gaojie Tang from Jinan University presented a paper titled “Beyond Spousal Bargaining: High Sex Ratios and Gendered Intergenerational Household Labor Allocation in China.”



The high-quality event received positive participants’ feedback, such as promoting international exchanges and providing a valuable reference for future research and policy-making on China's aging society. This year marks the seventh time IESR has collaborated with GLO to encourage scholars around the world to hold in-depth discussions and contribute to solutions to economic issues.



Ceremony Honoring

On the evening of May 16, workshop participants attended the appointment ceremony for Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann. As the Chairman of GLO and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Population Economics, Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann has joined IESR at Jinan University as Honorary Professor. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Shuaizhang Feng.



As Professor Shuaizhang Feng noted in the speech, since 2018, IESR and GLO, led by Professor Klaus F. Zimmermann, have jointly held seven joint conferences focused on trending topics, such as the labor market effects of the Belt and Road initiatives, the COVID-19 pandemic, social security networks, social policy, and aging society. More than 100 scholars from 12 countries, including well-known economists from MIT, Johns Hopkins University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Yale University, participated in this series of high-quality conferences. Professor Feng emphasized that with Professor Zimmermann's support in academic and research, IESR will be empowered to promote international cooperation and improve its international communication capacity in economics.



Next, Professor Zimmermann delivered his acceptance speech, expressing his gratitude to IESR and his strong research interest in China's economic and social development. He was also looking forward to participating in more academic activities held by IESR and contributing wisdom to research on the Chinese economy and society.



As an internationally renowned scholar in economics, Professor Zimmermann has published many influential papers and books and conducted in-depth research on issues such as the labor market, immigration, and population aging. His outstanding contributions in these fields are widely recognized by the global academic community and profoundly support policymaking in this regard.
