The 2019 China Meeting of the Econometric Society (2019 CMES) was held in Jinan university, Guangzhou on June 18–20, 2019, hosted by the Institute for Economic and Social Research (IESR). The 3-day meeting attracted nearly 300 scholars from all across the globe who attended a number of distinguished keynote lectures and actively participated in parallel discussion sessions thus having an exceptional opportunity to interact with each other, share recent developments in economic research and expand their network across academia.
The Econometric Society is an international society devoted to the advancement of economic theory in its relation to statistics and mathematics. The Society has been organizing these annual meetings in China since 2013 to promote academic exchanges between scholars in China and the rest of the world.

CMES 2019 keynote lectures
In addition to the keynote lectures, there were 66 parallel sessions on microeconomic data and research, statistical machine learning in finance, spatial econometrics and networks, infrastructure investment and efficiency, entrepreneurship in China, housing price and macroeconomic fluctuations, empirical analysis of auctions and procurements, China’s economy and etc. Other key sessions covered a wide spectrum of areas within the fields of labor economics, development economics, environmental economics, health economics, family economics, regional economics, industrial organization and international trade. Over the meeting, nearly 250 papers were presented in parallel sessions (you can find detailed program here).

China Meeting of the Econometric Society 2019 was also marked by the launch ceremony of IESR Center for Real Estate and Regional Economics with Yongheng Deng, Professor and the John P. Morgridge Distinguished Chair in Business at the Wisconsin School of Business, UW– Madison, appointed as its Honorary Director.
The launch and inaugural ceremony was followed by a related round table discussion on transformation of real estate and regional economic development in China, where Hanming Fang (Penn), Li Gan (SWUFE), Xiaobo Zhang (PKU), Hong Qin (RUC) and others touched upon such heated topics in today’s China as property rights and housing prices, reverse mortgage and income stability for the elderly, demographic structure and housing prices, urbanization and real estate markets, among others.

This year’s China Meeting of the Econometric Society in Guangzhou was indeed a success that not only attracted a huge number of on-site participants but also an audience of half a million that was watching a live broadcast of James J. Heckman’s keynote lecture, the launch and inaugural ceremony of IESR Center for Real Estate and Regional Economics, as well as the round table discussion that followed afterwards.
Participants seemed to be very enthusiastic about the meeting, many of whom have left very good feedback. We hope that everyone was able to get something valuable from it and therefore will be encouraged to attend future CMES hosted by other universities in China.
As James J. Heckman pointed out, China Meeting is the platform that encourages the production of new knowledge, the dissemination of existing knowledge and the training of next generation scholars. Over the years, it has brought new knowledge on China as well as new networks of people who now have a chance to interact with each other – people who are very highly related in terms of the research topics they originally work on, but who initially may not know each other. According to the professor, the meeting has also brought different universities together in a common forum. As he explains, universities in China often compete with each other, but here – they are cooperating to demonstrate and disseminate their knowledge.
