ASSA Annual Meeting 2019: IESR Reception and Faculty Recruitment

2019-01-07

On January 4–6, 2019, our Dean Shuaizhang Feng, Prof. Sisi Zhang, Yizhen Gu and other IESR representatives traveled all the way to Atlanta to attend ASSA Annual Meeting 2019 (Allied Social Sciences Association, ASSA). One of the main purposes of such visit – IESR reception and international faculty recruitment. It is already the 4th year in a row IESR recruits its faculty at ASSA Annual Meeting.

Shuaizhang Feng invited the members of the Global Labor Organization (GLO), the Kuznets Prize Ceremony of the Journal of Population Economics and the ASSA 2019 participants to join the reception of IESR. During the reception, our dean introduced the institute and informed everyone about the hiring interviews that were about to take place at the ASSA job market later that week. Then, recollecting his last visit to IESR in 2018, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Population Economics and the President of Global Labor Organization (GLO) Klaus F. Zimmermann put in quite a few good words about IESR, noting the strong research climate, attractive working conditions and ambitious researchers working here at IESR.

The Kuznets Prize Ceremony then followed where Klaus F. Zimmermann awarded Yoo-Mi Chin (together with Nicholas Wilson who was not present at the ceremony) for the best paper published in the Journal of Population Economics. The paper studies the HIV/AIDS pandemic using national household survey data from 14 sub-Saharan African countries, which suggests that a rise in disease risk increases the total fertility rate and the number of surviving children.

This year, IESR recruited young scholars holding a Ph.D. in the fields of econometrics, industrial organization and international trade, applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, and finance. We have received nearly 300 candidate applications from a number of distinguished universities including Princeton University, Stanford University, Columbia University, University of Chicago, Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, and others. After carefully selecting 118 most promising candidates, IESR special-term professors Jie Bai (Harvard University), Daniel Yi Xu (Duke University) and Vincent Yao (Georgia State University) joined Shuaizhang Feng, Sisi Zhang, Yizhen Gu and others in carrying out a series of hiring interviews.
